Custom Mylar Bags for Coffee丨Roaster’s Packaging & Shelf Appeal

Custom Mylar Bags for Coffee Roaster's Packaging & Shelf Appeal

Custom Mylar packaging bags dedicated to coffee adopt a seven-layer composite structure (PET/AL/PE/Nylon), boasting two major advantages of freshness preservation and aesthetic appeal. They can block 99.9% of oxygen (tested in accordance with ASTM D3985 standard), extending the shelf life of coffee from 2-3 months with ordinary packaging bags to 6-12 months, while the degassing valve maintains a low-oxygen environment.

Third-party laboratories have confirmed that these packaging bags can extend the shelf life of products by 2.3 times and increase the repurchase rate by 22% (data from Blue Bottle’s 2022 promotion data). Their matte surface and UV printing process all comply with SCA’s visual standards.

Roaster’s Packaging

Roaster’s Packaging takes custom Mylar bags as the core carrier, achieving 99.9% oxygen barrier rate, 0.01g/m²/24h low moisture permeability and 100% ultraviolet barrier through a 7-layer composite structure (PET/AL/PE/Nylon). Combined with the Degassing Valve, the CO₂ retention rate is increased by 45%, and the optimal tasting period is extended to 6-12 months.

Field tests by American roasters show that such packaging increases the shelf life by 2.3 times, raises the premium space per bag by 40%, and is directly associated with repurchase rate and brand recognition.

Freshness Preservation

Barrier Layer

The common 7-layer structure from outside to inside is: PET (Polyester)/Nylon/Adhesive/Aluminum Foil (AL)/Adhesive/PE (Polyethylene)/PE.

Among them, the aluminum foil layer is 0.1mm thick (2023 specifications of German Aluminum Industry Company), which is the main force for oxygen barrier — the oxygen transmission rate is only 0.03cc/m²/day (tested by ASTM D3985 at 25℃ and 0% humidity), 6666 times lower than that of single-layer PE bags (about 200cc/m²/day).

In terms of humidity, the combination of aluminum foil and PE stabilizes the permeability at 0.008g/m²/24h (ASTM E96 standard, 38℃, 90% humidity), while the permeability of ordinary plastic bags exceeds 5g/m²/24h under the same conditions.

Field test by Packaging Labs Inc. (US packaging material laboratory): For Ethiopian Yirgacheffe of the same roast level packed in Mylar bags, the moisture content only increased by 0.3% after 30 days (from 11.2% to 11.5%), while that in plastic bags increased by 2.1% (to 13.3%), the latter being close to the mold critical value (13.5%).

Ultraviolet barrier relies on the specular reflection of aluminum foil, with a measured barrier rate of 100% (ISO 21348 test, wavelength 200-400nm), avoiding the decomposition of volatile aroma substances (such as furans and pyrazines) in coffee oils by light.

Compared with transparent plastic bags, coffee packed in Mylar bags retains 65% more total aroma substances after 30 days of shelf exposure (SCA 2022 Flavor Retention Study).

One-way Degassing Valve

Roasted coffee beans continuously release CO₂ (peaking at 48-72 hours). If not discharged, the bag will burst, but oxygen ingress will cause oxidation.

The Degassing Valve (one-way degassing valve) resolves this contradiction: the valve body is a circular plastic sheet with a diameter of 1.5cm, with a silicone membrane with a 0.8mm aperture in the middle (patented by Asahi Kasei Corporation of Japan).

Working principle: When the CO₂ pressure inside the bag > 0.3kPa, the gas pushes open the silicone membrane and is discharged.

Measured data (third-party laboratory TÜV Rheinland): For 500g light-roasted beans packed, the exhaust volume of the degassing valve in 24 hours is 0.25L (equivalent to 0.05% of the bean weight), and the O₂ concentration inside the bag remains < 0.5% (initial air contains 21% O₂).

Compared with valve-free bags, coffee beans in valve-equipped bags have a 28% higher acidity retention rate after 15 days (pH value drops from 5.2 to 5.0 vs 4.8 in valve-free bags), and 19% less bitter substances (chlorogenic acid degradation products).

Sealing

The heat-sealed edge fuses two layers of PE at high temperature, requiring sufficient strength — in accordance with FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 standard, the peel strength of the heat-sealed edge must be ≥ 4N/15mm (tested with a universal material testing machine).

Test by American roaster Case Coffee Roasters: Using inferior sealed edges with 3N/15mm, the air leakage rate is 12% after 30 days; the air leakage rate of up-to-standard sealed edges is only 0.3%.

The reclosable zipper is double-track type (such as products from Swiss Zip-Pak company), and after 50 opening and closing tests (simulating consumers using it once a week), the smoothness of closing remains above 90% (ISO 527 tensile test).

The zipper puller is embedded with a silicone strip (0.5mm thick) to increase friction and avoid accidental opening — measured data shows that the misopening rate of zippers with silicone strips during transportation is 85% lower than that of smooth zippers (Amazon FBA warehousing data).

Different Environments

The 2023 report by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) provides specific scenario data:

Ambient Temperature Ambient Humidity Mylar Bag Optimal Tasting Period* Plastic Bag Optimal Tasting Period* Flavor Loss Rate (%/month)
20℃50%10-12 months2-3 monthsMylar bag 1.5, Plastic bag 8.2
25℃60%8-10 months1-2 monthsMylar bag 2.1, Plastic bag 12.5
30℃70%6-8 months<1 monthMylar bag 3.0, Plastic bag 18.0

*Definition of optimal tasting period: The time when the SCA cupping score drops ≤ 3 points (full score 100)

Extreme case: A roaster in Florida (average annual humidity 75%) packed beans in plastic bags, and rancid oil smell appeared after 7 days;

After switching to Mylar bags, there was no significant change in flavor under the same conditions for 45 days (cupping score dropped from 86 to 84, still within the specialty coffee range).

Information Delivery

Legality and Compliance

Identity and Traceability: FDA 21 CFR 101.5 requires that the roaster’s name and complete address (including street number) must be printed on the front or side, with font height ≥ 1.6mm (about 6pt);

EU 1169/2011 supplements that the “roaster registration number” (e.g., DE-NI-12345 for Germany) must be marked for easy traceability.

In a 2023 FDA penalty case, a California roaster was fined $25,000 for only writing the city name (not the street).

Product Attributes: The origin must be specified to country + production area (e.g., “Colombia · Huila Province”), the processing method uses internationally common names (Washed = Washed, Natural = Natural, Honey Process = Honey Process), the roasting date is accurate to the day (format MM/DD/YYYY), and the roast level is marked according to SCAA standards (Light Roast/Medium Roast/Dark Roast).

Batch Number: The EU requires it to include the production date + serial code (e.g., “230815-042” represents the 42nd batch on August 15, 2023), and the US FDA recommends adding the production line number (e.g., “L3” represents No. 3 roaster) to facilitate positioning during recall.

Allergen Warning: If nuts or dairy products are processed with shared equipment, it must be marked with “May contain trace amounts of nuts/milk” (FDA 21 CFR 101.4), and the contrast ratio between font color and background ≥ 4.5:1 (WCAG 2.1 standard).

In 2022, the EU recalled 12,000 bags of coffee from a brand for failing to mark allergens, resulting in a loss of $80,000.

Attention Points

2023 survey by Coffee Business Magazine (sample of 2000 North American coffee buyers aged 18-65):

  • Top 3 Must-Check Items: Roasting date (70% check first), origin estate (58%), processing method (55%).
  • Secondary Attention Items: Flavor description (42%), brewing suggestions (35%), roast level (30%).
  • Age Differences: Gen Z (18-25 years old) pay more attention to “estate stories” (62% are willing to pay a 15% premium for characteristic estates), while middle-aged groups (40-55 years old) prioritize “freshness of roasting date” (78% refuse to buy beans roasted more than 30 days ago).
Layout

Font and Contrast: Key information (roasting date, origin) uses sans-serif fonts (such as Helvetica), font size ≥ 8pt (about 2.8mm high), contrast ratio ≥ 4.5:1 (black background with white text or white background with dark gray text).

Test by the Vision Council of America: 8pt text at a reading distance of 30cm can be recognized by 90% of people with normal vision within 1 second;

If smaller than 6pt, it takes 2.5 seconds, and the loss rate increases by 40%.

Partition Logic: The main visual area (accounting for 60% of the packaging area) places the brand logo + flavor description (using SCA flavor wheel terminology, such as “Citrus Notes/Caramel Finish/Black Tea Aftertaste”);

The sidebar (30%) places brewing suggestions (water temperature 90-96℃, powder-to-water ratio 1:15-1:17); the bottom (10%) places compliance information (batch number, allergens).

Icon Assistance: Processing methods use ISO standard icons (Washed = water drop + fermentation tank, Natural = sun + drying bed), roast levels use color bars (Light Roast = light brown #D2B48C, Dark Roast = dark brown #654321), and icon size ≥ 1cm² (to ensure clarity).

Test by Intelligentsia Coffee: After adding icons, the recognition accuracy of processing methods increased from 65% to 92%.

Custom Mylar Bags for Coffee Roaster's Packaging & Shelf Appeal

Bag Type Selection

Flat Bottom Bag

The size is usually 4×6 inches to 5×7 inches (10x15cm to 13x18cm), with a capacity of 8-12 ounces (227-340 grams), which is just enough to hold the amount for one cup of pour-over coffee (15g powder to 240ml water at 1:16 powder-to-water ratio).

2024 quotation from American packaging supplier PacMoore: Basic model (no printing) $120 per 1000 pieces, plus single-color printing $150 per 1000 pieces.

Third-party laboratory test (TÜV Süd): Packing 300g light-roasted beans, stacking 5 layers (total height 15cm) without deformation, compressive strength 8kg/cm² (ASTM D642 standard), suitable for placing on counters for customers to smell.

Case: Portland local roaster Heart Coffee Roasters uses 4.5×6.5 inch flat bottom bags for “Weekly Single Origin” (limited to 50 bags), with estate stories + flavor notes printed on the label, priced at $6 per bag ($2 more expensive than regular models), with a sell-through rate of 92% during the trial period, and 35% of buyers subsequently purchased large packages of the same estate.

Stand-Up Pouch

The size is 5x8x3 inches to 6x9x4 inches (13x20x8cm to 15x23x10cm), with a capacity of 12-16 ounces (340-454 grams), corresponding to a week’s consumption for a family (15g powder per day).

The base thickness is 0.3mm (PET material), bearing capacity 2kg (no collapse when filled with beans), and passing the stability test when stacked 10 layers (total height 40cm) (ISTA 3A transportation standard).

The cost is higher than flat bottom bags: PacMoore 2024 quotation Basic model $180 per 1000 pieces, plus hot stamping logo + window $250 per 1000 pieces.

The window uses 2mm thick PET transparent sheet (scratch-resistant), accounting for 15% of the bag surface, allowing direct viewing of bean color and particle size.

Test by Intelligentsia Coffee: The shelf life of windowed models is 1.8 times longer than fully enclosed models (eye-tracker data).

The applicable scenarios are clear: core products, award-winning beans, seasonal limited editions.

Seattle roaster Slate Coffee Roasters uses 6×9 inch stand-up pouches for “Ethiopian Guji Natural”, with a gold-colored origin map printed on the base. In 2023, this model accounted for 28% of store sales, with a repurchase rate of 41% (brand internal data).

Spouted Bag

Spouted bags add a food-grade PE spout (diameter 1.2cm) at the top, equipped with a screw cap, preventing powder from spilling when pouring, suitable for coffee powder or sharing packages.

The size is 6x10x4 inches to 7x12x5 inches (15x25x10cm to 18x30x13cm), with a capacity of 16-20 ounces (454-567 grams), enough for 3-4 people to share for a month.

The spout design is particular: the torque of the screw cap is 0.8-1.2N·m (ISO 6789 standard), which can be unscrewed by hand;

The inner wall of the spout has a 45-degree bevel, and the residual powder after pouring is < 0.5g (compared with 3-5g residual in non-spouted bags).

The cost is the highest: PacMoore 2024 quotation Basic model $250 per 1000 pieces, plus silicone sealing ring (air leakage prevention) $300 per 1000 pieces.

The silicone ring uses medical-grade liquid silicone, resistant to temperatures from -40℃ to 200℃, with no cracks after 50 opening and closing tests (SGS report).

Feedback data from household users (2023 survey by the National Coffee Association USA): Users using spouted bags reduce coffee powder waste by 2.3g per month (saving 0.8 pounds a year at 15g powder per day), with a satisfaction score of 4.7/5 (3.9/5 for non-spouted bags).

Chicago roaster Metric Coffee uses 7×12 inch spouted bags for “Blended Beans”, with the brand slogan printed on the spout, and the mention rate of “easy to pour powder” in online reviews reaches 63%.

Mini Bag

Mini bags have a size of 3×5 inches (8x13cm), with a capacity of 4-6 ounces (113-170 grams), focusing on portability.

The structure is similar to flat bottom bags, but with an easy-tear notch (tensile force ≤ 3N, ISO 527 test) and a hang hole (diameter 6mm, for hanging on shelves).

Cost $100 per 1000 pieces (PacMoore 2024), suitable for airport stores and hotel minibars.

Field test: Packing 150g beans, the total weight is only 160g (including the bag), 30% lighter than 200g cans.

Los Angeles roaster G&B Coffee uses mini bags for “Espresso Blend” in airport stores, with “Boarding-Friendly” printed on the label. In 2023, sales accounted for 45% of total airport store sales, with an average customer price of $8 ($3 higher than canned products).

Shelf Appeal

According to a 2023 survey by the Packaging Association of America, 67% of coffee initial purchases are triggered by attractive packaging, and custom Mylar bags have 52% higher shelf recognition than ordinary bags;

Transparent windows increase dwell time by 29%, and local hot stamping improves high-end perception by 38%.

Through millimeter-level design of color, structure, information and material, it establishes a connection with users within their 3-second decision-making window.

Visual

Color

A 2022 study in Color Research & Application tested 50 kinds of packaging and found that Pantone 476C (deep warm brown) makes users’ association intensity with “artisanal roasting” 2.3 times higher than gray, directly increasing purchase intention by 41%.

Ready-to-drink coffee or portable packages targeting young people need bright colors to attract attention. Pantone 102C (bright lemon yellow) increased the pick-up rate among 18-25-year-old customer groups by 33% in tests, and Blue Bottle’s ready-to-drink series uses yellow + dark gray color contrast.

In addition, for cold brew coffee, where users seek “refreshment”, using Pantone 326C (lake blue) results in a 28% higher “coolness” score than white bags (Packaging Digest 2023).

The main color of the same packaging should not exceed 2 types, with 1 auxiliary color. A 2023 experiment in the Journal of Marketing stated that packaging with more than 3 colors makes users feel “cluttered”, increasing decision-making time by 1.7 seconds and abandonment probability by 19%.

Pattern

Use simplified symbols for origin stories: For example, for Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, instead of drawing the entire national map, just draw a coffee flower (local specialty) + simple mountain shape (plateau origin). After Stumptown did this, packaging recognition was 57% higher than text-only packaging.

For Colombian beans, use the outline of the Andes Mountains + coffee fruit silhouette, and Counter Culture’s users feedback that “you can tell it’s high-mountain beans at a glance”.

Choose one step of the process to draw: Roasters turning beans, pour-over water flow — select one action to draw as a small illustration.

Peet’s uses a simple line drawing of “roasters smelling beans”, with “1920 Traditional Craft” marked next to it, and regular customers say “it has that vibe”.

A 2023 test by Packaging Digest showed that patterns with more than 3 elements reduce users’ memory probability by 44%.

White space is important: Patterns should not cover more than 70% of the bag surface, leaving 30% blank. Verve Coffee’s bags have half a bean drawn on the left, a large blank space on the right, and the brand name in the middle. Tests found that users focus on the brand 2.1 seconds longer than with full-pattern bags.

Layout

First layer: Brand name + biggest selling point. Use bold sans-serif fonts (such as Helvetica Bold), with font size accounting for 15%-20% of the bag surface.

Stumptown’s “Single Origin” uses 24pt font, placed in the middle of the bag top, with the brand name “Stumptown” in 18pt next to it — the obvious size difference makes primary and secondary information clear at a glance.

Selling points should be straightforward: directly state “Light Roast”, “100% Arabica”, instead of “Arabica beans processed with light roasting technology”.

Second layer: Flavor + scenario. Use icons + short words, such as ☀️ for light roast, 🌰 for nutty flavor, with “Citrus|Floral” marked next to it.

Blue Bottle’s portable packages draw a small cup + wavy line (iced drink), with “Cold Brew Ready” marked below, selling 29% faster in summer than unmarked ones (Nielsen 2022).

Third layer: Trust badges. Organic label (USDA Organic), roasting date (Roasted on 05/20), award badge (Good Food Award) — arrange them in a row with small icons, no more than 5.

Counter Culture places these badges at the bottom of the bag in 8pt font, which users can see when flipping the bag, resulting in 31% higher trust than placing them on the side (Journal of Consumer Behaviour 2022).

Fonts also matter. Specialty coffee uses handwritten fonts (such as Brush Script) to show “human touch”, as Intelligentsia does;

Modern-style products use sans-serif fonts (Futura), like La Colombe’s ready-to-drink packages. Do not mix more than 2 font types to avoid clutter.

Custom Mylar Bags for Coffee Roaster's Packaging & Shelf Appeal

Structure

Stand-Up Base

A 2023 test by Packaging Digest found that Mylar bags with stand-up bases have 73% larger visible shelf area than flat bags, directly increasing the noticed probability by 58%.

American brand Intelligentsia widened the bottom to 8cm (ordinary bag bottom width 5cm), using double-layer Mylar folding support, which remains stable without collapsing after being filled with coffee, with 62% higher stability than single-layer bases.

Another example is Stumptown, which processed the base edges with a 2mm arc to avoid sharp corners scratching shelf partitions, reducing the return rate by 19%.

Data shows that the base height accounting for 1/3 of the total bag height is the most proportionate. Peet’s follows this ratio, resulting in a 47% higher visual fullness score than randomly designed bags.

Special-Shaped Bag

A 2022 survey in the Journal of Retailing showed that special-shaped packaging has a 64% higher initial attention rate than square bags, especially suitable for niche specialty beans.

Peet’s made bags shaped like stacked coffee beans, simulating the curve of 3 stacked beans, with a pointed top and round bottom. Placed in the middle of the shelf, the pick-up probability increased by 48% compared with the same square bags.

In addition, Stumptown’s “pod-shaped” bags bulge on one side like a pod and lie flat against the shelf on the other side — unique yet not occupying extra space. Tests found that its “pop-out index” in cluttered shelves is 71% higher than standard bags.

For example, La Colombe once tried spiral-shaped bags, which were eye-catching but difficult to adapt to bagging machines, increasing costs by 32%. Later, they switched to slightly curved edges (arc radius 3cm) to balance uniqueness and practicality.

Exposed Functions

Transparent Window

La Colombe uses a 5cm diameter circular window, positioned slightly above the front of the bag, just revealing the oily luster of the beans.

A 2023 experiment in the Journal of Sensory Studies stated that users judge “freshness” through this window twice as fast as reading text, with trust increased by 39%.

The window material is food-grade PET, 0.2mm thick — transparent and scratch-resistant, remaining clear for half a year.

Easy-Tear Notch

Peet’s made the easy-tear notch with arc corners (radius 2mm) and pre-pressed creases 1mm deep, allowing users with weak grip to tear it easily, reducing the proportion of complaints about “hard to tear” from 23% to 5%.

Another detail is the notch position — 3cm from the top, just within the reach of the user’s thumb. Intelligentsia designed it this way, increasing the success rate of first-time bag opening after pick-up by 81%.

Hang Hole

Hang holes can be hung on shelf hooks during promotions, occupying 30% more display space than flat placement.

Stumptown’s hang holes have a diameter of 1.5cm, reinforced with ribs, remaining undeformed after 10 days of hanging, and sales during the promotion period were 27% higher than non-holed bags (Nielsen 2022).

Touch Feel

Edge Processing:

Ordinary bag edges are sharp and easy to scratch hands. Verve Coffee rounded all corners (radius 1mm), resulting in a 45% higher proportion of user feedback saying “doesn’t prick hands when touched”.

Peet’s used heat-pressing instead of glue for bag seams, resulting in uniform seam thickness (0.1mm), feeling like a single piece of material rather than glued.

Material Splicing:

For example, Intelligentsia’s bags use matte Mylar on the front (delicate touch) and glossy Mylar on the back (reflective for a premium look). When users flip the bag, the contrast between the two touches increases the “premium feel” score by 38%.

Another example is Counter Culture, which added a layer of soft Mylar (0.08mm thick) to the handle (if available), preventing hand strain when carrying heavy loads, and increasing positive reviews for long-distance carrying by 52%.

Data shows that users’ memory of packaging touch can last for 3 days, and the probability of picking it up again when seeing it on the shelf is 63% higher than bags with poor touch (Journal of Consumer Psychology 2023).

Material

Basic Performance

A 2023 test by Packaging World stated that its oxygen barrier property is 90% higher than kraft paper and 75% higher than PE plastic bags, extending the shelf life from 8 weeks with ordinary bags to 12 weeks.

When users see the “shelf life 12 months+” label on the packaging, trust is 37% higher than 8-week bags (Nielsen 2022).

The ASTM D2457 standard tested that a glossiness of 60-70GU (gloss units) is the most comfortable.

American brand Stumptown uses 65GU Mylar, which is not glare in sunlight, and has a 29% higher “premium feel” score than competitors with 80GU on shelves.

Zoned Brightness Control

Glossy surface for brand LOGO area: Peet’s made a 2cm area around the LOGO with glossy Mylar, and the rest with matte. When light shines, the LOGO stands out without glare. Tests found that users focus on the LOGO 1.8 seconds longer than fully glossy bags.

Matte surface for background: Blue Bottle’s specialty bean bags use matte Mylar for the main body (40GU glossiness), feeling like sandpaper to the touch, with a small amount of hot stamping text. The proportion of users rating it as “low-key and textured” is 42% higher (Journal of Sensory Studies 2023).

Avoid large-area mirror surfaces: La Colombe once tried fully glossy bags, receiving feedback that they “look like discounted supermarket products”. Later, they switched to “glossy border + matte center”, and acceptance rebounded by 58%.

Selection for Different Occasions

Matte for specialty slow-roasted beans: Verve Coffee uses matte Mylar for light-roasted single-origin beans, with a delicate touch that makes users associate it with “handcrafted slow work”, increasing purchase intention by 33% compared with glossy bags.

Data shows that the friction coefficient (surface friction) of matte film is 0.2 higher than glossy, making it less slippery to hold, especially for large packages over 227g — the proportion of users saying “stable to hold” is 51% higher.

Glossy for ready-to-drink/portable packages: Intelligentsia’s cold brew ready-to-drink bags use glossy Mylar, with reflection for a “refreshing” look. Among a pile of dark bags on summer shelves, glossy bags have a 27% higher pick-up rate (Nielsen 2022).

Glossy surfaces are also scratch-resistant — when rubbed with keys in a backpack, there are 63% fewer scratches than matte film (Packaging Digest 2023 test).

Mixed material splicing: Counter Culture tried “matte front + glossy back”, and users feel the touch change when flipping the bag, increasing the “interesting” score by 38%, especially attracting 25-35-year-old customer groups who like “small designs”.

Environmentally Friendly Materials

A 2023 survey by the Organic Trade Association showed that 35% of coffee consumers are willing to pay a 10% premium for “recyclable/plant-based Mylar”, and this proportion reaches 48% among Gen Z (18-26 years old).

Plant-based Mylar: Replaces petroleum-based raw materials with 30% bio-based resin extracted from sugarcane bagasse. Stumptown’s “Eco Roast” series uses this material, marked with “Plant-Based Film” on the packaging, with sales 22% higher than ordinary bags three months after launch.

Recyclable Logo: Print “Recyclable Symbol #4” (Mylar recycling code) on the bag. After Peet’s did this, the proportion of users who think the “brand is responsible” increased by 41%.

Note: Do not mark randomly — only Mylar with less than 5% aluminum content can enter specific recycling streams, otherwise it is considered “misleading” (FDA 2023 guidelines).

Thinner but not less performant. Use 0.09mm thick Mylar (0.12mm for ordinary bags), maintaining strength through stretching technology. La Colombe’s lightweight bags use 15% less material than regular bags, reducing carbon emissions by 12%, and eco-labels attract 19% more new customers.

Material Splicing

Soft-hard splicing: Intelligentsia uses 0.08mm soft Mylar for the handle (if available) and 0.1mm hard Mylar for the rest, preventing hand strain when carrying heavy loads — the proportion of users saying “thoughtful” is 52% higher.

Texture overlay: Blue Bottle embosses fine grid patterns (0.05mm depth) on the bag surface, feeling like paper to the touch, with a 36% higher “affinity” score than smooth Mylar, especially popular among female users (61% share).

Transparent window + opaque area: La Colombe uses 0.2mm PET (transparent) for the window and matte Mylar around it. The contrast makes bean grains clearer, and users judge “freshness” 1.5 seconds faster than fully transparent bags (Journal of Sensory Studies 2023).

Thickness

0.1-0.12mm thickness is most commonly used. Stumptown tested 0.08mm (too soft, easy to collapse) and 0.15mm (too hard, difficult to fold), finally settling on 0.11mm — after filling with 227g beans, the bag’s stiffness (bending resistance) reaches 12N (Newtons), without slumping against shelves, and the proportion of users saying “looks solid” is 47% higher.

Reinforced corners. Peet’s adds 0.02mm thick ribs to the bag bottom and side seams, preventing bottom bulging after filling with beans, and shelf stability is 39% higher than bags without ribs.
